Summary of Work in Education May 1989 ~ March 1996 I started working full-time in education at Mills College, where I held positions as the Audio-Visual Assistant and the Acting Director of Technical Services. Both positions involved providing various forms of technical support for classes and events on campus and some training to faculty, staff and students. During this period, I also took a short leave and had a temporary position as the Audio-Visual Media Coordinator on the Spring 1995 voyage of Semester at Sea.
March 1996 - February 1999 I spent nearly three years working for the AEON conversation school chain in Japan. The first two years were in Tottori, teaching primarily children, and the final year was in Kurume, teaching mostly adults.
July 1999 - November 1999 While doing my Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics degree at the University of Southern Queensland, in Australia, I also worked part-time as an ESL instructor and research assistant.
March 2000 - March 2003 After returning to Japan, I worked at St. Mary College in Nagoya. In addition to various skills-based courses, I taught content-based courses including American History, Women's Studies, and Teaching English to Children. I was also the Children's Program Coordinator.
April 2001 - present (Part-time teaching) In April of 2001, I started teaching EFL part-time at Nagoya College and have since also taught for various periods at other universities including Nagoya University of Foreign Studies, Sugiyama Women's University, and Nagoya Women's University. At Chukyo University, I have continued to teach part-time since September of 2006.
October 2004 - March 2012 During this period I held three different full-time positions at Nagoya College in the English Communication Department. First, I received an interim appointment as an Instructor with program coordination responsibilities. Later, I was hired to the same position on an ongoing contract basis. Finally, in December of 2008 I was made a regular member of the department's faculty.
April 2012 - present I chose to leave my permanent position at Nagoya College in 2012 and took on a Language Instructor position at the Nanzan English Education Center. After four years there, I was selected for a regular faculty position in charge the Business English curriculum in the Nanzan University Department of Business Administration. As of 2020, I am a tenured Associate Professor.
Summary of Professional Association Positions Beginning in 2010, I have held several officer positions within the Japan Association for Language Teaching, including being the Coordinator of the Extensive Reading SIG for approximately five years, serving on the executive board and other national committees, being a member of the planning committee for several conferences, being the Chair of two conferences, and in November 2016 I was elected as the JALT Director of Public Relations.
Summary of Papers and Presentations I have authored or co-authored over a dozen academic publications and made about three dozen presentations, including some at international conferences on language learning and teaching and others leading professional development workshops.
